Even though An Yongbok(安龍福) was lowly status, he crossed the border and devoted his life to the territorial dispute over Ulleung Island. He prevented Ulleung Island from Japanese invasion, but he was exiled as an offender who had violated the positive law. However, intellectuals in the late Chos.n Dynasty rehabilitated An Yongbok in the contemporary historic space by connecting him with diplomatic affairs in the territory(疆域問題). The intellectuals sprang him from offender to national hero and remembered him as a representative figure who settled the dispute over the territory. It is worthy of notice that the intellectuals revived him as a historical figure and described him as a national hero. In particular, they remembered and recorded him in different ways upon the contemporary historical circumstances from the 17th century to the 20th century. Intellectuals in the late Chos.n Dynasty emphasized him as a symbol of awareness for the territorial dispute, intellectuals in the transition period to modern era paid attention to him for the patriotic enlightenment movement, and intellectuals in the Japanese colonial period revived his reputation for the national liberation movement.
