The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of parenting
and young children's behaviors according to mother's self-differentiation
level. Subjects of this study were 244 mothers having 3 to 5 year-old
young children drawn from four preschools in Cheongju city. The pilot
study was done to investigate the applicability of survey instruments.
Data were analyzed by the frequency, percentage, Cronbach α, t-test, and
ANOVA with Duncan post-hoc test using SPSS program. The results of
this study were as follows.
First, mother's parenting behaviors which composed of affective and
controlling parenting behaviors were different according to mother's
self-differentiation level with family of origin. A mother having high or
average self-differentiation level with family of origin showed more
affective parenting behaviors than mother having low one. Second, there
was only a differences in affective parenting behaviors associated with
mother's self-differentiation level of marital relationship. A mother whose
self-differentiation level was stable with husband was more likely to
show affective parenting behaviors than a mother whose one was low or
average. Third, young children's externalizing problem behaviors were
varied while their internalizing problem behaviors were not different
according to mother's self-differentiation level with family of origin.
Forth, in both young children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors,
there were significant differences according to mother's self-differentiation
level of marital relationship.
