Songdo, ancient capital of Goryeo, was one of the most visited and well-renowned attractions by scholars of early Joseon Period. Nam Hyo-On went on sightseeing tours to Songdo four times. He visited there frequently since his private fields were nearby. After his third trip to Songdo with his close friends, Wu Seon-Eon, Yi Jeong-Eun, Yi Chong in the autumn in the sixteenth year of King Seongjong(1485), he recorded his journey and sentiments in Songgyeongrok. The book covers the sentiments of escape from the routines of daily life they dreamed and melancholy of the rising scholars of King Seongjong period who were isolated from the reality. However they exercised their confidence as scholars and writers while tracing back the footsteps of senior scholars. It appears well in the rhyming poem in responding to Choi Sa-Rib``s poem which hung in the arbor, Cheonsujeong. It also shows he could get consolation from a quiet mountain temple or a skeptic perspective to reconsider fidelity of Jeong Mong-Ju that was fixed as collective memory. The characteristic of Songdorok is different from the attitude of bureaucratic scholars such as Seo Geo-Jeong, Yi Seung-So in that they symbolized Songdo as entertainment and reminiscence; again it is different from the rising scholars such as Chae Su and Yu Ho-In in that they controlled entertainment and intended to transform reminiscence into historic poems. Songdorok was full of unique pathos, that is, frustration of a young idealist who dreamed of a new era and consolation of Songdo. To appreciate this aspect properly we need to apprehend the data of his life and circumstances of the times as well as Songgyeongrok, a record by chronological journey, let alone poems of the period. Only then we could read the true sentiments of Nam Hyo-On hidden beyond the brief record. These poems were originally included in Songgyeongrok but later in the future, it was divided in the process of compiling Chugangjib and included separately by types of poems. I expect a new way of reading these travel books or the records of journey through these methods.
