중ㆍ고령자의 사회활동참여와 인지기능 = Social Activity Participation and Congnitive Function in Middle and Older Adults : A Longitudinal Study on the Reciprocal Relationship

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 중ㆍ고령자의 사회활동참여와 인지기능의 종단적 상호관계를 분석하는 것이다. 이는 대부분의 기존연구가 사회활동과 인지기능 간의 일방향적 관계를 가정한 것과 달리 상호관계를 동시에 분석함으로써, 이들의 관계를 보다 면밀히 파악하기 위함이다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 우리나라 중ㆍ고령자를 대표하는 한국고령화 연구패널자료를 활용하였고, 다변량 잠재성장모형으로 자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중ㆍ고령자의 사회활동참여와 인지기능 간의 종단적 관계를 분석한 결과 양방향적 상호관계가 나타났다. 즉 중ㆍ고령기에 하는 사회적 활동이 인지저하를 지연시킬 뿐 아니라, 더 좋은 인지기증을 가진 사람일수록 이후 더 많은 사회활동에 참여하였다. 이러한 결과는 사회적 활동과 인지기능 간에는 단순한 원인과 결과의 인과관계적 해석보다 순환적 관계로 이해하는 것이 필요함을 시사한다. 둘째 기존에 인지기능의 위험 요인으로 보고되어온 사회경제적 특성들이 인지기능뿐 아니라 사회활동참여에도 부정적인 영향을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 고연령, 저학력, 저소득의 사람들이 사회적 활동에 더 적게 참여하고 이것이 다시 인지기능 저하에까지 영향을 미치는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이상의 결과를 토대로 중ㆍ고령자의 인지저하 예방과 사회활동참여 활성화를 위한 이론적ㆍ실천적 함의를 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study aimed to investigate the reciprocal longitudinal relationship between social activity participation and cognitive function. The uniqueness of the current study is in its investigation on the simultaneous reciprocal relationship between social activity participation and cognitive function, which differs from previous studies examining the unidirectional relationship. Participants were 10,254 individuals aged 45 and over who participated in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging.
The results are as follows: First, multivariate latent growth curve model identified the reciprocal longitudinal relationship between social activity participation and cognitive function. The baseline social activity participation had a significant effect on the rate of change in cognitive function, and the baseline cognitive function had a significant impact on the rate of change in social activity participation. These findings support a probability of cyclical directionality that high levels of cognitive function lead to high levels of social activity participation, which in turn maintain or raise cognitive function. Second, socioeconomic status was a risk factor to social activity participation as well as to cognitive function. This suggests that individuals with lower levels of education and lower incomes are less likely than others to participate in social activity, and this leads to a negative effect on the cognitive function. Based on these findings, implications for theory and practice are discussed.
