ShikSan(息山) LeeManBu(李滿敷) wrote 7 biographies for 11 people. These were the literary writings on the basis of the features and tradition of biography genre. A biography, from the origin of that genre, had the special concern and affection about unworthy and poor people. The biographies written by LeeManBu(李滿敷) were faithful to this tradition of biography genre in succession. On the ground of this point, we can call his writings ‘Se-Min Biography(細民傳)’, that is, ‘A Biography for unworthy and poor people’, because his most biographies chose the main characters among people out of power or in common people’s street. LeeManBu(李滿敷) had the writer’s mind that a writer must try not to disappear the trace of main characters, unworthy and poor people. This could be a kind of writer’s mind. Shortly, his writer’s mind could be summarized by this phrase, ‘Write up unworthy and poor people who worked strange, amazing deeds and did a miracle, so hand down to posterity(紀載事迹, 以傳於後世)’. This writer’s mind became the motivation of his writings, he formed his works that were faithfully according to the features and styles of biography genre. Also, in the viewpoint of literary, LeeManBu(李滿敷) was not only a scholar, a philosopher but also an excellent biographical writer, a literary man by the evidence of his writings. And he seemed to have influence on many writings of ‘Se-Min Biography(細民傳)’ group quantitatively as well as qualitatively in the later Cho-Sun(朝鮮) dynasty. But it needs a special discussion focused on that theme.In <SongChungUi biography(宋忠義傳)>, <RyungIlSunSa biography(靈日禪師傳)>, <KimKiNam biography(金起男傳)>, he wrote up unworthy and poor people who worked strange, amazing deeds and did a miracle, so he expressed his writer’s mind that a writer must try not to disappear the work and trace of main characters. Through these writings, LeeManBu (李滿敷) wrote up writings which were faithful to the features and tradition of biography genre. He used the forms of questions and answers, a style of dialogue. He delivered the circumstance with vivid descriptions, he formed characters by means of simple but intensive descriptions. Through all these literary features, we could notice him as an excellent biographical writer. In <DanMilSamHyo biography(丹密三孝傳)>, <LeeManHo biography(李萬 戶傳)>, <HyoJaRyulBuChungNo biography(孝子烈婦忠奴列傳)>, <LimHyoJa bio- graphy(林孝子傳)>, he showed the ideology and ideal of a Confucian. He described the mental values such as loyalty to a nation, devotion to parents, an exemplary woman, justice vividly, by writing up real existing characters. The main characters of his biography were mostly insignificant scholars or low-ranking officers, military nobility, and unworthy, common people or the humble. The writer LeeManBu(李滿敷) looked at them with affectionate eyes and very pity feelings. This affectionate eyes and pity was the motive power to lead his biography. If the main character contributed to make the ideology and ideal of a Confucian prominent, it didn’t matter that the character’s humble origin was. He seemed to judge that he could evoke people’s sympathy much by confirming the ideology of a Confucian from unworthy and poor people. LeeManBu(李滿敷) was the perfect biographical writer, who described the usual theme, the ideology and ideal of a Confucian literally. I expect a rhetorical analysis and literary, esthetic study on the several writings later.
