This paper examines Gim Seryeom(金世濂)``s understanding and the significance of Haesalog(海蹉錄), it is the record of the 1636 Korean Embassy to Japan(通信使; Tongsinsa). The 1636 Tongsinsa is important with regard to Joseon Dynasty``s foreign policy toward Japan. Because Joseon government dispatched a delegation after Yanagawa incident(柳川 事件: 調興事件) which fabricated a sovereign´s message. This paper traces Gim Seryeom``s life and a network of friends, they had an influenced on each other. Gim Seryeom did not count Japan as an uncivilized country, but rather he appreciated them. This kind of view was different from a contemporary. Gim Seryeom left two types of documents after 1636 Tongsinsa, one is daily recording, Haesalog, another poetry, Sasanglog(蹉上錄). This paper focused on Mungyeonjablog(聞見雜錄) in Haesalog. Mungyeonjablog is miscellaneous records of Japan such as customs, nature, history. The description is relatively precise and accurate. He analyzed past Tongsinsa records and ascertained whether these were correct. Finally he edited some of documents and added his own thoughts. Gim Seryeom``s Mungyeonjablog subsequently influenced many people, for instance, Jo Gyeong (趙絅), Heo Mok(許穆) and An Jeongbok(安鼎福).
