북아일랜드 또래조정활동의 평화교육적 의미 = Meaning of Peace Education in relation to Peer Mediation Activities in Northern Ireland

This field research paper explores the meaning of peace education in relation to peer mediation activities in Northern Ireland which have tried to reduce violence based on social division. Peace education is one of conscientious curriculum stimulating the peace characteristics of human beings that challenge the social evils derived from the structural violence.
Peace education in the divided societies such as Korea, Northern Ireland and old Germany aims to empower people to construct the peaceful system of coexistence by critically understanding the knowledge of national division and forming the peace-oriented attitude and values so as to overcome the divided system. In particular, it is urgently needed to dismantle the religious division in schools which has justified the division of political economy in Northern Ireland. In transition from two religious identities conflicting structure between Catholic and Protestant into multi-cultural society, peer mediation has been introduced to Northern Ireland integrated schools in order to cope with plural social problems as one of nonviolent and peaceful life skills for peace. Peer mediation is evaluated as a peace education in schools which practices the culture of peace encouraged by UNESCO beyond religious extremism for the purpose of education for conflict resolution and mutual understanding among friends from diverse backgrounds.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 사회적 분단화에 따른 폭력을 줄이고자 시도된 북아일랜드 또래조정 활동이 평화교육적 의미를 담고 있는지를 탐구하기 위한 현장참여연구 논문이다. 평화교육은 구조적 폭력에서 야기된 사회적 악에 대항하는 평화적 본성을 자극하고 도전역량을 길러주는 의식적인 교육과정이다. 한국을비롯한 북아일랜드 및 구독일 등과 같은 분단사회의 평화교육은 분단체제극복을 위해 이와 관련된 지식을 비판적으로 인식하고 평화지향적 태도와가치를 갖게 함으로써 공존가능성이 높은 평화체제를 구축하는 평화교육 역량을 기르게 하는 것을 목표로 한다. 무엇보다 북아일랜드의 경우 정치경제적 분단을 정당화해왔던 종교적 분단을 학교교육에서 극복하는 것은 가장시급한 평화교육적 과제이다. 특히 구교와 신교라는 두 종교적 정체성만이대립하던 분단구조에서 다문화사회로 이행하는 오늘날, 다원화된 사회문제에 대해 비폭력적이고 평화적인 방법으로 대처하기 위해서 평화적인 실생활문제해결능력(life skill)인 또래조정(peer mediation)이 평화교육의 한 활동으로 제시되었다. 통합학교에서 이루어지는 종파를 초월한 친구들 간의상호이해 및 갈등해소를 위한 또래조정은 유네스코 등이 추구하는 평화의문화를 실천하는 평화교육의 보편성을 담고 있다고 평가된다.
